Enjoy Summer Indoors and Out

Decorated Model May 2016 Kitchen

Without a doubt, summer is here!  Most of us are spending more time grilling, picnicking, planting flowers, and just relaxing outside with family and friends. Sometimes we overlook the opportunity to bring summer inside our homes, as well, with simple seasonal accents and ideas to freshen up the interior of our homes. So put away the candles and heavy throws and replace them with accents that make your home feel cool, fresh, breezy and lighter!

Clear out the clutter. It’s amazing how much cleaner, fresher and lighter your home can feel once excess is removed. Put away some of the knick knacks to show more open space. Since we’ve moved away from the season of cozying up by the fire and TV, consider rearranging your furniture to make it open and inviting. Angle the couch so you now have a great view of the garden outside. Depending on how much you entertain during the summer, move chairs and accent furniture to other rooms to provide more seating and conversation options in rooms you use most.

Minor décor changes can make a big impact. Put away the deep colored textured throw pillows, heavy blankets and warm toned rugs. Replace them with lighter cotton throws, natural textured rugs, brightly colored pillows and accents, and your room is instantly transformed. Fresh flowers and greenery can take the place of candles.

Take advantage of the wonderful fresh, locally-grown produce available during the summer months.  A few fresh strawberries or cucumbers added to a pitcher of water or other beverage dispenser provide a refreshing drink to beat the heat. A big bowl of fresh fruit such as limes or lemons also makes a lovely accent with an added bonus of bringing a fresh clean scent into your home.

Summer is a wonderful time to plant an herb garden and there are many creative ways to do this indoors. Gather colorful eclectic small pots, fill them with dirt and your favorite fresh herbs and place them on the kitchen window sills, on a small shelving unit or layered on a tiered kitchen tray. Wall mounted container herb gardens are also a great way to keep fresh herbs on hand all summer long.

Do you have a beach or lake house, or want your home to feel like one? Weave beach colors like pastel greens, blues and yellow into your décor. Replace your regular set of dishes and glasses with mixed and matched dishes in cooler beach tones.  Place shells collected on vacation in a glass vase or bowl. Combine them with a jar of sand from your favorite vacation spot and you can almost hear and smell the sights and sounds of the ocean.
